Research Shows That Therapeutic Riding Enhances Many Positive Traits
Riding Lessons Print E-mail

Victory Gallop offers three riding sessions per year.  During each session, riders come out weekly to learn how to groom, tack and ride the horses.  Each session also includes a horse show, activity nights and volunteer opportunities for the riders who are old enough to volunteer.

Children are referred to Victory Gallop by teachers, counselors, physicians and parents from Summit County, as well as Medina, Cuyahoga and Stark counties.  Co-Directors Sue Miller and Kim Gustely, along with a host of volunteers, work together to create a loving, fun, stimulating, safe and nurturing environment for children and their families.  Victory Gallop encourages participation of children ages 3 to 18, of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, in its therapeutic horseback riding program.  Both the co-directors and board of trustees of Victory Gallop have remained steadfast in their commitment to keep its' riding classes small (no more than 4-5 children) so that lessons can be structured to maximally meet the unique needs of the children.  Children are grouped in classes according to their age and riding ability.  This promotes the opportunity to develop friendships while gaining horsemanship skills. The benefits of participating in Victory Gallop are many.

  • A fun, safe, effective and satisfying therapeutic horseback riding experience and environment for children regardless of their family's financial means;
  • A foundation for healthy child development: problem-solving, self-discipline, decision making, self-esteem, building life and work skills and developing relationships;
  • Physical exercise and skill-building, including sense of balance and hand-eye coordination;
  • Caring for animals and learning to control horses;
  • Participation in Victory Gallop is used as a recognition and reward venue by teachers, principals, and counselors for children exhibiting desirable classroom and school behavior;
  • Victory Gallop is an environment where children are accepted for who they are and a place where they feel that they belong (based on testimonials and observations of educators, counselors, social workers, caregivers and parents);
  • Education and respite for families of children with life-threatening illnesses and emotional and/or behavioral concerns.

Petie the Pony Print E-mail

Perhaps the most visible aspect of the Victory Gallop program is Petie the Pony.  Petie is a miniature horse/Shetland pony cross that puts a smile on the face of the children he meets while making room visits at Akron Children's Hospital and Cleveland's Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.  Certified through the Delta Society, Petie has been serving the community since 1997.

Petie has received national recognition including a feature program on PAX-TV, profiles in People Magazine and Reader's Digest and extensive area media coverage.  To see Petie and the amazing work that he does please click the videos below.
